Requests for Benzodiazepines for Fear of Flying
Patients may occasionally request that a GP or Nurse prescribe diazepam or similar sedative medications (benzodiazepines) to alleviate fear of flying or to assist with sleep during air travel.
In line with current clinical guidance, the prescribing of these medications for this purpose is not recommended, for the reasons outlined below therefore we will no longer issue this medication for this.
- Prescribing guidance states that benzodiazepines should be used only for the short‑term management of an acute crisis in generalised anxiety disorder. Fear of flying alone does not constitute a generalised anxiety disorder, and individuals experiencing such a crisis would generally be considered unfit to fly.
- Risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT): Diazepam can induce an unnaturally deep sleep, reducing normal movement. Prolonged immobility increases the risk of developing blood clots, which can be life‑threatening. This risk is further increased on flights lasting longer than four hours.
- Adverse effects and dependency: Benzodiazepines can impair memory, coordination, and concentration, and they carry a risk of dependence. Due to increasing misuse, these medications are now classified as controlled drugs.
- Safety during emergencies: Although in‑flight emergencies are rare, sedative medications may reduce awareness and reaction times, potentially placing you and others at risk should an emergency response be required.
- Legal considerations abroad: Benzodiazepines are illegal or restricted in several countries. Possession may lead to confiscation or legal consequences.
- Travel insurance implications: Travel insurance providers require disclosure of medical conditions and medications. Failure to do so may invalidate your insurance and result in claims being declined.
